
DeLorme Earthmate GPS PN-20


Finally, for the first time, an inexpensive GPS receiver with
the features, power, and capabilities to work in, and integrate with a
GIS
department. The
Earthmate GPS PN-20
comes standard with USGS based, 1:24,000 scale, topographic data. In addition the unit is
capable of using aerial photography, satellite
imagery, NOAA charts, or even your GIS data as a base layer.

Integrate USGS Topographic maps, MrSID and
GeoTIFF imagery,
NOAA Nautical Charts and even your own GIS layers (ArcView
Shape files, MapInfo, AutoCAD) into the Earthmate PN-20 GPS.
Field data access is now virtually
unlimited and cost effective.
The
rubberized housing is rugged and waterproof
to IPX-7 standards. It features a 12
Channel, WAAS enabled, GPS receiver which is fast, sensitive and has
proven to
work well under forest canopy. The
high-resolution, 2.2” TFT color display is viewable in
direct sunlight.
It does
not offer post-processing capabilities however data points collected
with WAAS
and point averaging can attain better then 3 meter accuracy.

forest field test, on a steep, densely covered, north slope, comparing
the
Garmin GPSMAP 76CSx, with the Delorme
Earthmate GPS PN-20 resulted in no significant difference in terms of
GPS
signal acquisition time, accuracy, or reception strength between the 2
units
and resulted in the following comment:
"...Delorme advantages are 1)
Background topo maps are markedly superior. 2) waypoint averaging is
significantly faster 3) aerial photo backgrounds are very helpful
4) the ability to display our GIS lines and points is a great
productivity enhancement feature 5) the Delorme screen is a bit
nicer to look at as well. The only disadvantage he noted was a somewhat
slower screen redraw rate (not enough to be frustrating but still
noticeable)..."
